I found my mom’s old J.Crew cardigan and it is covered in food stains. My mom said that you couldn’t wash it in the washing machine and water would damage it. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stains?

Well you can wash knitted garments but only by hand. I would use cold water and a mild liquid soap such as Woolite. Drop a little dish soap on the stains and rub them gently. Let the sweater soak in the water overnight. If the stains have been there a long time, they will be very very hard to remove. After the sweater is washed, rinse in cold water, place two light coloured thick bath towels under it, lay it flat in a sunny spot to dry. You may need to change the bath towels as they absorb most of the moisture of the sweater. It could take 24 to 48 hours before it dries.
